Six prisoners escape police cells


Mansa, March 3, ZANIS———Police in Samfya have launched a manhunt for four remandees who escaped from lawful custody.


The four were among the six remandees who escaped from Samfya Police Station in the early hours of Sunday but two have been re-arrested.
Disclosing the incident to ZANIS in Mansa, Luapula Province Deputy Commissioner of Police, Webby Shula, named the four that are on the run as Ernest Kunda, 21, of Lubwe Village in Chief Chitembo’s Chiefdom, who is charged with theft,   Mwange Chanda, 27, charged with rape and Mwanga Chilonge, 23, charged with house breaking and theft, both of Chisunka Village in Chief Kasoma Bangweulu’s Chiefdom.


Others are Pyson Lwando, 25, of Kafusha Village, charged with arson, Chiluba Mpongwe, 23, of Gibson Village in Chief Kalasa Mukoso’s Chiefdom, who is charged with trafficking in psychotropic substance and Mwape Mungulu, 20, of Chisunka Village were rearrested.


The Deputy Commissioner of Police said the six escaped from lawful custody after cutting the iron bars of the windows using an arch saw between 01:00 and 04:00 hours on March 1, 2015.


Mr Shula said police have since launched a manhunt to bring the culprits to book while those that have been rearrested will appear in court soon.


He has since appealed to members of the public to help police with investigations.


In another development, a 34-year-old man of Chalowa Village in Chief Kunda’s Chiefdom died on the spot after being hit by a vehicle, a Toyota Carina which was driven by Vincent Kabwa, 30, of Ndeke in Ndola.


Kelvin Chikwila was hit at Mwalongo village along Chembe road on March 1, 2015 around 09:25 hours, while one passenger, identified as Ignatius Mwape, 30, of Kundafumu Village, with the driver sustained minor injuries.
