AFTER the election result of MMD Masaiti constituency parliamentary seat was nullified by the Supreme Court, Michael Katambo has switched camps and has applied to contest the same seat on the Patriotic Front (PF) ticket in the by-election scheduled for April 14.
He is among the three aspirants, others being Clifford Zulu and Edgar Chembo, who have applied to contest in the by-election.
The Supreme Court on February 9 this year upheld a High Court judgment which nullified the election of Mr Katambo as MMD Masaiti member of Parliament (MP).
This is in a case in which Mr Katambo appealed to the Supreme Court against the nullification of his election by the High Court on grounds of electoral malpractice.
PF provincial secretary Amon Chisenga confirmed receipt of the three applications including that of Mr Katambo.
“I can confirm that as a party, we have received applications from three people who have shown willingness to contest the Masaiti constituency by-election. The PF Central Committee should also be in receipt of the applications from these three candidates,” Mr Chisenga said.
Mr Zulu, a businessman, contested the same seat under the PF ticket in the 2006 elections but lost to Gladys Lundwe of the MMD. Mr Chembo is chairperson of the Zambia Baptist Association
