Lusaka, February 12, ZANIS–The opposition MMD has approved the appointment of two of its Members of Parliament to serve in the PF government as full Cabinet Ministers.
President Edgar Lungu today appointed and swore-in Mwandi MMD MP Michael Kaingu as Education Minister while Vincent Mwale of Chipangali is the new Minister for Youth and Sports.
The two MMD MPs were among the other PF MPs appointed to serve in the first Cabinet of President Lungu since his election victory last month.
The appointments and swearing in ceremony were held at State House today.
MMD publicity secretary Raphael Nakachinda confirmed to ZANIS in an interview that the former ruling party had consented to the appointments of the two Members of Parliament.
Mr Nakachinda commended President Lungu’s humility and decision to seek permission from the MMD to appoint the two party law makers to serve in his Cabinet.
He said the approach taken by the Head of State will greatly reduce friction and improve inter party relations between the ruling PF and the MMD.
Mr Nakachinda charged that the PF and MMD differed in the past over the appointments because late President Sata used it for politicking as opposed to President Lungu who is using consensus building to govern the country.
Mr Nakachinda however said that the party has not agreed to form a partnership for development with the Patriotic Front as discussions are still taking place.
He said this is due to the fact that the MMD wants to understand where the PF is coming from and whether the ruling party wants to form an alliance.
And speaking after he was sworn-in as Youth and Sports Minister by President Edgar Lungu, Chipangali MMD MP Vincent Mwale also confirmed that party President Nevers Mumba consented to his appointment to serve in the PF Government.
Mr. Mwale said he will try as much as possible to look into the plight of the youths who make up 60 percent of the national population.
He said he will also do his best to ensure that minor sports in the country are promoted and sponsored.
