The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has announced that Deputy Mayor Potipher Tembo will discharge the functions of the office of mayor following the appointment of Mulenga Sata as Deputy Minister at State House by President Edgar Lungu last week.

LCC Public Relations Manager Habeenzu Mulunda said Mr. Tembo will act as mayor until the next ordinary council meeting where a substantive mayor shall be elected to finish the term started by the former Mr. Sata.

Mr. Mulunda said in a statement to ZANIS that this is in accordance with Section 19 of the Local Government Act, Chapter 281 of the Laws of Zambia.

Mr. Sata was elected Councillor for Kabulonga Ward 16 in 2011 on the Patriotic Front (PF) ticket.

He has so far served as Deputy Mayor before he was elected as Mayor in April 2014, the position he held until his recent appointment as Deputy Minister.

During his tenure at the helm of the Council, Mr. Sata served on various boards including that of Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company, Pan African Council on Local Government as well as an executive member of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa.

Mr. Mulunda said Mr. Sata also served as President of the Local Government Association of Zambia, a mandate which covers 90 municipalities and cities around the country.

He said the LCC was indebted to Mr. Sata’s contribution and wished him well in his new portfolio.
