ZAPD saddened over shooting of mentally disabled man in N/western Province

—The Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) has expressed sorrow and regret over the recent shooting of a man with a mental health disability in Solwezi .

 

In a statement released to ZANIS today, ZAPD Acting Director General, Obbie Musuma, strongly condemned the incident that happened in North Western Province.

Mr Musuma has since warned members of the public that all persons with disabilities are protected by laws and enjoy equal rights as any other person in the country.

 

He reminded that the Persons with Disability Act number 6 of 2012 provides for the rights of persons with disability, further stating that Article 4 mandates all citizenry of this country to have respect for physical and mental integrity.

 

He added that Article 4 mandates people to have respect for difference and acceptance of persons with disabilities as part of human diversity and humanity.

 

Mr Musuma said there is no justification of discriminating or perpetuating violence against people with disabilities regardless of the situation or circumstances.

 

He hoped that the police will investigate the matter and establish the facts that led to the shooting.

 

David Kaona, 54, who has a mental health disability, was shot by his Royal Highness Senior Chief Musele, who is a traditional leader in North Western Province.
