The Fisheries Department, in collaboration with Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) in Kalabo district, has arrested  seven people, including three women,  for illegally fishing and selling  fish during the fish ban period.

Kalabo District Assistant Fisheries Technician, Owen Kafutubiji, who confirmed the development to ZANIS, said the seven people arrested were found fishing in the Zambezi River using wrong fishing nets during the fish ban.

Mr Kafutubiji disclosed that 85 kg of fresh fish and 42 wrong fishing nets were found and confiscated around 17:00 hrs yesterday during an intensive operation carried out on the Zambezi River.

The fisheries officer warned of stern action against any individual that would be found fishing or selling fish during the fish ban period.

He said it was worrying that even women had engaged themselves in illegal activities, adding that the department would work tirelessly to ensure that people  found wanting were visited by the law.

The fish ban period, which was effected on December 1, 2014, will come to an end on March 1, 2015.

If a person is found guilty and convicted in the courts of law, one would face either a three year jail-term, a fine of not less than K3000 or both.
