New passenger vessels reduce accidents

Mpulungu, Feb 3, 2015, ZANIS—The Fisheries department in Mpulungu district says the introduction of two new passenger vessels on Lake Tanganyika has reduced the number of accidents.

The government recently purchased two passenger boats to service the water ways between Mpulungu and Nsumbu.

Regional Fisheries acting manager Peter Mutale confirmed the development to ZANIS in Mpulungu today.

He said the two boats that were introduced on the Lake have helped reduce the number of accidents.

Mr. Mutale said the lake has strong winds that sometimes lead to serious accidents adding that ever since the government introduced the two boats the number of accidents on the lake had drastically reduced.

He said the introduction of the boats has also reduced the number of hours people used to travel on the lake.

Mr. Mutale said even the transport fees had also reduced making it easy for local people to travel to Nsumbu and other outlying areas on the shores of the lake.

Government through the Mpulungu Harbor Corporation and St. George Fishing Company have introduced two passengers’ vessels on Lake Tanganyika to service the lake.
