Zambian President Michael Sata has died in London at the age of 77.

 

Secretary to the Cabinet Rowland Msiska announced the death of President Sata in Lusaka at 08:42 hours this morning.

 

Dr. Msiska said President Sata died at King Edwards the Seventh hospital in London at 20:11hours last night.

 

 

“It is with a heavy heart that I address you today to inform the nation that our beloved President and leader, Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata has passed on,” he said.

 

He said First Lady Christine Kaseba and the President’s son Mulenga Sata, who is also Lusaka Mayor, were at the bedside when the President died yesterday.

 

Dr. Msiska said funeral arrangements will be announced later.

 

He has since urged all Zambians to remain calm, united and peaceful as they await further funeral details.

 

President Sata, who was taken for treatment to London on 20th October 2014, was born on 6th July 1937.

 

He became Zambia’s fifth President after winning the September 20th 2011 election and subsequently sworn in on 23rd September the same year.
