Rain storm leaves trail of destruction in Nchelenge District

Nchelenge, October, 21, ZANIS —A storm in Nchelenge District last night left a trail of destruction to both government and private property.

The storm which started around 20:30 hours lasted for over 30 minutes ripped off roofs to sections of the Zambia Police offices, and the Department of Community Development and social welfare.

This left some forms for the social cash transfer soaked.

A check by ZANIS found the roofs to 15 houses, offices and part of a classroom block at Mubamba Primary School ripped off.

At Nchelenge Secondary school a kitchen had the roof ripped off while a 66 KV ZESCO transmission line and 11 KV distribution line in Kashikishi area has collapsed.

The line supplies power to Nchelenge, Chiengi, Kaputa and Mpweto in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Two ZESCO teams were this morning found working on the damaged power line and no immediate comment was made by ZESCO manager.
Meanwhile, Nchelenge District Administrative Officer Gift HaJongola has described the destruction as disaster.

Mr Hajongola said the office of the District Commissioner is still waiting for an evaluating team from the buildings department to give a consolidated report on the destruction caused by the storm.
