ECZ in the process of demarcating wards and polling district in Samfya

Samfya, October 21, 2014 ZANIS— The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has started the process for delimitation of wards and polling district boundaries in Samfya district in Luapula Province.

The exercise will involve the creation of two new wards and 22 polling districts in order to reduce long distances that voters cover during
voter registration and elections.

Luapula Province Local Government Officer Amusa Zaza said there is need to adjust electoral boundaries as the current boundaries
are far flung for people travel.

Mr Zaza said the long distances at times contribute to voter apathy.

He said the creation of new wards and poling districts is important as it will ensure that all new districts have at least one constituency and it will realign boundaries of wards that have been affected by the creation of new districts.

ZANIS reports that Mr Zaza said this when he opened a District delimitation meeting at Samfya Council Chamber.

He said Samfya district has more than one constituency within its administrative boundary.

Mr. Zaza added that the commission will only need to create more wards and polling districts in order to enhance meaningful representation of the people.

He urged stakeholders, ward councillors and Chiefs representatives to consider
creating two wards and 22 polling districts for Bangweulu and Chifunabuli constituencies.

He however said the commission has since informed government on the
need to amend the constitution in order to increase the number of
constituencies.
