Government has congratulated the Zambia national soccer team on last night’s outstanding performance against Niger.

In a Statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Joseph Katema said players and the coaching bench deserve commendation for their determination, discipline and team work resulting in the victory.

Katema said government is confident that the Zambia national soccer team will qualify for the African Cup of Nations finals to be held in Morocco next year.

He said the three-nil win over Niger in the AFCON qualifier played at Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa stadium yesterday, shows that with hard work, nothing is impossible.

Katema, who is also Chief Government Spokesperson, said the people of Zambia harbour no slightest of doubt that the 2012 Africa soccer champions have the necessary skill, technique and determination to overcome the remaining opposition.

He said the team has done it before and have no cause to doubt that it will do it again and bring honour and glory to the country.

Katema said this will be a fitting gift for the people of Zambia as the country celebrates 50 years of independence during which football has not only been a source of entertainment, but also a great unifying factor for the nation.

He has meanwhile commended the soccer fans and the public at large, for their support and peaceful behaviour during yesterday’s match.

Katema said it is worth stressing that the importance of the bi-annual AFCON tournament, like other sporting activities, goes beyond medals and prosperity on the continent.

He said the tournament is an important platform for promoting peace and unity which is a fundamental pre-requisite for sustainable development and prosperity on the continent.
