Malawian nabbed for drug trafficking

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested a 32-year-old Malawian national for trafficking in 1.39 grammes of cocaine.

DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo said Richard Mathews of Zani Muone area was apprehended from Lusaka’s Thorn Park area.

And the commission over the weekend arrested over 40 people country wide for trafficking in various quantities of cannabis.

Those arrested and jointly charged include Kelly Mibenge, 32,a businessman of Mtendere compound in Lusaka and Wisdom Sikaonga, 22,a businessman of John Laing in Lusaka for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 251kilogrammes (kg).

Ms. Katongo revealed in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today that the duo was arrested during a joint operation with the Zambia police Service in Livingstone’s notorious Maloti compound.

Others arrested include David Bwalya 36, of Itala compound in Mkushi district for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 34.5kg, Richard Musonda, 42, a peasant farmer of Chisanaga village in Kasama district for trafficking in 24kg of loose cannabis and Abel Chibwe, 49, of Njeke village in Luwingu district for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 8.7kg.

She said in the Copperbelt Province, the commission has arrested Memory Kaunda Mulala, 31, a housewife of B168 Mine Township in Chililabombwe for trafficking in 13.6kg of loose cannabis.

And in Eastern province, the commission has arrested Enock Mwale, 42, of Mawole village in Lundazi district for being in possession of K200 counterfeit notes in K100 bills.

Ms. Katongo disclosed that the suspect was apprehended at a named market as he was about to transact.

She said all suspects will appear in court soon.
