Table tennis players’ response elates coach

Lusaka, October 1, ZANIS—National table tennis coach Boyd Kabunda has expressed happiness with the players’ response ahead of next month’s Zimbabwe invitational tournament.

Kabunda said the commitment and competition among the players during training would make Zambia the continent’s sporting giant in table tennis.

He told ZANIS Sports in a telephone interview in Lusaka today that only eight players will be selected from the current provisional team to represent the country at next month’s tournament.

Kabunda said the team, which had two separate trainings this morning at the Olympic Youth Development (OYDC) and Olympiafrica in Lusaka, will set up residential camp five days before the Zimbabwe tournament.

Apart from Zambia, other African countries invited for the Zimbabwe tournament are Lesotho and Botswana.

And Kabunda disclosed that the Zambia Table Tennis Association (ZTTA) will next year roll out a national table tennis talent identification programme.

Kabunda said the programme is part of ZTTA’s master plan of identifying talent in remote parts of the country in order to create a wider selection of players for both national and international competitions.
