Armed robbers stormed Luwingu Post Office in Luwingu District in Northern Province and attempted to blow up the safe to steal money .

Both Northern Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga and Zambia Postal Service Regional Manager Boniface Mwila confirmed the development to ZANIS in Luwingu yesterday.

Ms Katanga said Luwingu Post Master Charles Mwansa reported the incident to police.

She said six men armed with unknown fire arms broke into the post office building around 01:00 hours and tied the security officer Edmond Mukuka 59 before carrying out their operations.

Ms Katanga said the robbers then used explosives to try and gain entry to the strong room but failed.

The Police Chief said the robbers then started breaking the wall of the safe using metal bars and logs but discovered that the safe was heavily secured.

The robbers then vented their frustration and anger on the watchman whom they threatened to kill but tied him up, placed a huge stone on his body and left him to die.

Ms Katanga said the extent of the damage could not be immediately established and that investigations have since been instituted.
