— DEC nabs 30 for drug trafficking

-Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) says it has arrested over thirty people countrywide for trafficking in cannabis.

 

DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo says  the commission has arrested Robert Mwale a 24 years old inmate at Petauke State prison for trafficking in 20 balls of cannabis.

 

Ms.Katongo disclosed that upon being arrested, the suspect led DEC officers to the supplier of the drugs Florence Zulu a 38 years old business woman of Anusa village in Petauke District who was also apprehended for trafficking in over 8kg of cannabis.

 

ZANIS reports that the DEC spokesperson said this in a statement in Lusaka, today.

 

She added that the commission has arrested two inmates at Kansenshi state prison for drug trafficking on the copperbelt.

 

Emmanuel Mutinta a 30 year old inmate was arrested for trafficking in 2.5kgs of cannabis while Mike Mukume a 23year old inmate was arrested for trafficking in over 4kg of cannabis, she said.

 

Ms. Katongo said the commission has also arrested Matamba Binwell a 46 years old peasant farmer of kansana area in mwinilunga for unlaw cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 30kg and Robert Chilwezhi a 46 years old farmer of kachaya area for trafficking in over 4kg of loose cannabis.

 

She said the suspects will appear in court soon.

 

And  Lundazi Magiistrate court has convicted a former Chikomene ward councilor for being in possession of prescription drugs branded GRZ.

 

Ms Katongo who disclosed this in the same statement said  that Charles Tembo ,a former MMD Chikomene ward councilor was arrested by the DEC in May for being in possession of 2 bags of 50kgs prescription drugs branded GRZ has been fined K25,000 in default three years six months Imprisonment with hard labour.

 

Ms. Katongo said the suspect has been given 30 days to pay the money or face a jail sentence.
