Zambia, DRC sign MoU for hydro power development

The Zambian and Democratic Republic of Congo governments have signed an intergovernmental memorandum of understanding for the development of hydro power sites on the Luapula River.

Speaking during the signing ceremony in Lusaka this afternoon, Permanent Secretary in the ministry of mines, energy and water development, Charity Mwansa says the purpose of the agreement is to define the scope of cooperation by the two countries in order to develop the common hydro power sites on the Luapula River.

Ms Mwansa says infrastructure development in the energy sector constitutes one of the priorities in the cooperation of SADC member states.

She adds that the bilateral cooperation in the area of electricity is mutually beneficial both socially and economically.

And speaking at the same function, Democratic Republic of Congo head of delegation Thadee Nkumbi has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working closely with the Zambian government to foster development.
