Police detain murder suspect

– Police in Nchelenge district of Luapula Province have detained a 40 year- old man to help with investigations in a suspected murder case.

Lackson Chishimba of Katoto village in chief Kambwali’s area was picked by the officers around 21: 00 hours last night and is being held at the Nchelenge Police Station.

Luapula province Commissioner of Police Malcolm Mulenga confirmed the detention of Chishimba to ZANIS in Nchelenge in a statement issued today.

Mr. Mulenga said Chishimba has been detained in connection with the death of  36 year- old Thomas Chongo of the same locality.

He said Chongo died yesterday around 11: 00 hours after allegedly being beaten by unknown people on Tuesday.

He disclosed that the body of the deceased is lying at Saint Paul’s Mission Hospital mortuary waiting for a post mortem before burial.

Meanwhile, three juveniles aged between 12 and 14 of  Nchelenge district  will appear before the magistrate court for defilement.

Luapula Province Police chief Malcolm Mulenga said the officers in the area have formally arrested and charged the three juveniles with the offence of defilement and that they will appear in court soon.

Mr. Mulenga said the trio of Kambwali chiefdom is alleged to have taken turns in defiling a nine year old girl of the same locality on 9th August, 2014.

He said the matter was reported to Nchelenge Police Station by the father of the victim Brightness Mwale aged 40 of Chikange village in chief Kambwali’s area.

Commissioner Mulenga said the three juveniles have since been bonded while the medical report has indicated that the victim sustained bruises on her private parts.
