Zambia’s opposition United Party for National Development (UNDP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Katuba Constituency in the Central Province Jonas Shakafuswa has been arrested and charged with assault and malicious damage to property. The vocal MP was arrested on Sunday in Kaoma district in Western
Province where he and other party officials are campaigning for the UPND candidate for a bye-election in Mangango Constituency which takes place this week.
Western Province police Commissioner Lombe Kamukoshi confirmed the arrest and said Shakafuswa was arrested after he allegedly attacked three local government officials in Kaoma and damaged public property in the scuffle.
She said he was still detained in police custody but would be released on police bond later on Sunday and would be expected to appear in court shortly.
Campaigning for the Mangango seat has been marred by violent clashes mostly between supporters of the UPND and supporters of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) who accuse each other of fanning the flames of political animosity.
