The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) says the country does not have what it takes to legalize marijuana.

Speaking at a media breakfast in Lusaka today, DEC National Coordinator Addressie Munene says people lobbying for the legalization of marijuana are not well informed on the effects of marijuana on a person and on the country as a whole.

Mr. Munene says legalizing marijuana will allow the situation to get out of control citing the situation in Chibolya before the Commission moved in as an example.

He adds that the country does not have capacity to handle drug dependent people and a rehabilitation centre where those that depend on drugs could be taken, adding that government is just putting up a drugs rehabilitation centre.

Mr. Munene says all forms of drug abuse should be stopped and discouraged for a better Zambia.

And DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo has commended the media for the role they have played in uplifting the image of the Commission by reporting effectively on its many activities.
