Choma Municipal Council has impounded a truck carrying over 5,000 litres of Chibuku beer being sold to unlicensed traders at Makalanguzu main market in Choma today.

This happened when a team of public health inspectors from the local authority conducted a prompt inspection at the market where a truck belonging to Chomil Breweries was found selling the named alcohol to the traders.

Choma Municipal council Public Relations Manager, Robert Zawe, said the truck was impounded because the unidentified driver was selling the commodity in the open market and to unlicensed traders which is against the liquor regulations.

“The liquor licensing Acts are very clear that those who abrogate the
regulations should be penalised and the sale of alcohol in the open
market and to unlicensed liquor traders is an offence which attracts
penalties,” he said.

Mr Zawe said the Chomil Breweries have been asked to report at the local authority’s public health department for questioning on the breaching of the liquor regulations.

He said the truck shall only be released upon payment of a K500 fine which is the charge for the offence committed.

Mr Zawe noted that the local authority would continue to penalise business entities abrogating the laid down regulations in the district.

He further called on various property owners around Choma District who were not paying property rates to immediately do so as the council will soon embark on a penalising exercise to all unpaid up properties.
