President Michael Sata says government attaches great importance to traditional ceremonies as they complement government’s efforts in promoting the tourism industry in the country.

Meanwhile senior chief Mukumbi has thanked government for encouraging mining companies to invest in Solwezi District and other parts of North-western province.

President Sata also says traditional ceremonies are also important because they have proved to be one of the effective ways of safeguarding tangible culture heritage.

He said his administration also recognises the role traditional ceremonies play in inculcating good morals in young people so that they appreciate their historical background.

ZANIS reports that the Republican President said this yesterday in a speech read for him by Chiefs and Traditional Affairs minister Professor Nkandu Luo yesterday.

This was during the 37th Kufukwila ceremony of senior chief Mukumbi of the Kaonde people in Solwezi District.

He said the PF administration strongly believes that traditional leaders are strategic partners to government in enhancing peace and unity in the country.

The head of state said it was for this that the PF government will remain firmly committed to promotion of dignity of traditional rulers as custodians of cultural heritage.

Meanwhile senior chief Mukumbi has thanked government for encouraging mining companies to invest in Solwezi District and other parts of North-western province.

Speaking through his daughter, Brenda Muluka,  the senior chief said the presence of mining companies has contributed to changing the chiefdom as seen through employment creation and people’s lifestyles.

He said the Mukumbi royal establishment will support genuine investors who bring development to the area.

The Kufukwila ceremony is annual event that marks the tasting of the crop for the new harvest and is celebrated in the month of May.
