A woman has been killed and two men have been wounded by a “stray bullet” fired by a police officer who was targeting a suspected thief in Lusaka’s notorious Chibolya township.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said in an interview yesterday that officers opened fire after the suspect refused to cooperate and decided to run away.

Ms Chanda said the bullet hit the woman, who has been identified as Ivy Shimamba, aged between 45 and 50 years.
She said that Ms Shimamba died as she was being rushed to Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
“The officers were chasing a suspect who was running away. So they fired at the man, he was shot but he didn’t die and managed to escape with a wound.
“Then the bullet went to hit a woman, but she did not die right there. She died on the way to the hospital,” Ms Chanda said.
She said the same bullet hit two Tanzanian nationals, who sustained injuries and are admitted at UTH.
Ms Chanda said the officers were conducting patrols in Chibolya when they came across the suspected thief.
And the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested a banker in Lusaka for alleged money laundering involving about K50,000.
DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo said Chilolo Manda, 42, of Lusaka’s Matero East Township has been arrested for alleged theft by servant, forgery and uttering false documents.
Between January 1 and April 28, Manda allegedly forged 18 withdrawal slips totalling K49,800.
She also said DEC in Central Province has arrested and jointly charged a Tanzanian national and two Zambians for allegedly trafficking in miraa.
Ms Katongo said the trio allegedly trafficked in 222 bundles of miraa weighing over 100kgs and 100 sachets of dry miraa weighing 7.3kgs.
Those arrested are Francis Joseph Mwandiya, 24, a Tanzanian, Daniel Kaputula, 51, a driver of Kitwe and Alex Nenga, 36, also of Kitwe.
The trio was apprehended at Pensulo check point in Serenje on a Copperbelt-bound bus from Nakonde.
All the suspects will appear in court soon.
