The Ministry of Finance has released K87.6m towards the Farmer Input Support Programme((FISP), rural roads construction and the on-going construction of chiefs’ palaces.
Secretary to the Treasury, Fredson Yamba, announced that out of theK86.7m released, K60m will go towards the FISP, K22.6m for the rural roads construction and rehabilitation programme while K5m is earmarked for the on-going construction of chiefs palaces.
Speaking during the executive commentary on budget releases, Mr Yamba said Government will remain focused on ensuring that the overall objectives of the 2014 budget were achieved.
This is contained in statement issued to ZANIS by Ministry of Finance, Public Relations Officer, Chileshe Kandeta.
Mr Yamba said the release of funds for the Farmer Input Support Programme is a clear demonstration of government’s commitment towards achieving its long-term objective of diversifying the Zambian economy through agriculture as one of the leading sectors.
“The continued releases of funds for the rural roads programme demonstrates our desire for implementing agencies to rise to the occasion and ensure that the targeted roads are in a proper state of usability, not only for efficient haulage of the expected 3.3 million metric tonnes bumper harvest for the just ended season, but also in readiness for efficient delivery of inputs for the 2014/2015 farming season,” said Mr Yamba.
Mr Yamba has since appealed to members of the public to keep track of resources that are being released by the Ministry of Finance.
“I make this appeal on account of our strong belief that by sharing information, we will be promoting a tracking system that integrates measures of program performance with the costs associated with development programs,” he said.
He said promoting a tracking system was important because it connects program outcomes with budget releases, adding that the participatory monitoring system which they are promoting through issuance of frequent treasury briefs will allow people to see how taxpayers’ money is being spent.
He added that Zambians will also be able to examine the results achieved through expenditure by respective ministries, provinces and government spending agencies.
