Speeding vehicle rams into 4 pedestrians, kills 3

Police in Solwezi have arrested a 34 year-old man for allegedly causing the death of three people and injuring one person.

Brian Matoka was detained and arrested yesterday for allegedly having caused the deaths of three people and injuring one person yesterday along Independence Avenue in Solwezi district.

Zambia Police Deputy Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga told ZANIS in a statement in Lusaka today that Matoka, who was driving a Toyota Corolla registration number AJB 4201 at a high speed, failed to stop at a police check point and went on to hit three persons who died on the spot.

Mr. Hamoonga said Matoka then abandoned his motor vehicle and attempted to escape but was apprehended by a police officer who was coming from the opposite direction.

He said two of the three deceased persons have been identified as Paul Kaumba Kakoma aged 55 of Zambia compound and Febby Kankana aged 50 of Island compound while one female has not yet been identified.

The injured has been identified as Geoffrey Mungwa aged 35 of Zangameno compound and is admitted to Solwezi General Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased are lying in Solwezi General Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

Meanwhile, two people died on the spot after being hit by a Nissan Blue Bird car registration number AAX 4596 along Senanga-Mongu road.
The two died when the driver lost control of the motor vehicle and hit a cyclist and pedestrian, who sustained fatal injuries and died last evening.
The driver has been identified as Mulowa Litongo aged 36 of Mungule plots while the two deceased persons have been identified as Musole Limakazo aged 24 of Airport compound and Luhakano Lyeta aged 26 of Litambya area all of Senanga district.

The driver has since been charged with causing death by dangerous driving contrary to section 161 of the road traffic Act number 11 of 2002 and will appear in court soon.

Both bodies of the deceased are lying in Senanga district hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
