SPORTS administrator Betty Simbeye, who died on Saturday after an illness, was yesterday put to rest at Mitengo Cemetery in Ndola.
A sombre mood characterised Bethel Church International where scores of mourners, who included the badminton fraternity, had gathered for funeral service that preceded burial.
Simbeye, 46, represented Zambia at various international competitions as a badminton player in the late 1980s to the mid 1990s before becoming a sports administrator.
And speaking on behalf of the Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ), Badminton Zambia (BZ) general secretary Kingsley Mulenga paid glowing tribute to the late Simbeye for her contributions to the development of the sport in Zambia.
Mulenga said Simbeye was a rare breed in sports administration as she could sacrifice her resources for the well-being of badminton in Zambia.
He said the association will remain indebted to her for the services she rendered to the country as a player and administrator.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of our official. Betty was an asset for Badminton Zambia and her passion was beyond borders as she also served on the African Council for Women in Badminton and we will greatly miss her,” he said.
