Late delivery of FISP worries ZEC

Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) President Bishop Ignatius Chama says the current food security situation in the country is a threat to human development.

Bishop Chama says the situation has been escalated by the late delivery of farming inputs to most farmers particularly fertilizer for the 2013/2014 farming season.

Bishop Chama states that there has been a nationwide cry on the late delivery of farming inputs hence the need for government to come with measures that will protect the people from starving.

He stresses that the delay is likely to negatively affect this year’s maize harvest and that it has come a time when mealie meal prices have been hiked which have been caused by the removal of subsidies on maize and fuel.

The clergy man has since called on government to mitigate the suffering of the people and avoid delays in distributing the farming inputs this year.

He adds that government should seriously explore remedial measures to mitigate the impact of high mealie meal prices on the poor.
