A team of officers under the Ministry of Health led by Deputy Director- of Planning and Budgeting Mubita Luwabelwa yesterday handed over the site earmarked for the construction of Kazungula District Hospital.
The site was hand over to the project contractor, Mercury Lines Ltd of Lusaka.
And Mercury Lines Ltd Construction Company has been given two weeks in which to mobilize itself and start works immediately following the handover of the construction site.
Speaking at a meeting held at Sekute Community Development Trust offices shortly after the site visit in Kazungula, Project consultant under buildings department Linus Kunda advised the contractor to work closely with the consultant for the good of the project.
Mr. Kunda warned that shoddy works shall not be tolerated adding that it is the important for the contractor to pay attention to the required standards by seeking approval for anything to be used on the project.
He charged that the security part is now in the hands of the contractor now that the site has already been officially handed over adding that only authorized people shall be allowed to visit the site.
Mr. Kunda disclosed an estimated amount of K 11, 770, 951 million which will go towards the first phase scheduled to be completed by first week of January 2015.
He said the project is a 47 week duration given a situation that the contractor commences works two weeks from now.
Mercury Lines Ltd Construction Company Senior Quantity Surveyor Shupa Ambulaya said his company has been in the construction business since 2005 but will be constructing a hospital for the first time.
Mr. Ambulaya assured its client, the Ministry of Health that his company shall prove itself adding that the company shall do its best and promised to complete the project within the stipulated period of time.
He said his company has so far done a number of multibillion contracts such as construction of a filling station, University of Zambia hostels and also rehabilitation works of some structure in Kabwe.
Earlier, the team paid a courtesy call on Kazungula District Commissioner Pascalina Musokotwane who emphasized the need to expedite the construction works at Kazungula district hospital.
Ms. Musokotwane said Kazungula will soon be a hive of activities citing the construction of Kazungula Bridge across the Zambezi River among others.
She said the construction of the district hospital is important as accidents are bound to happen especially when such activities take shape hence the need to have a desirable hospital in place in the area.
And Ministry of Health Deputy Director- Planning and Budgeting Mubita Luwabelwa assured the District Commissioner that the project will be a success especially that the contractor was ready to start the works immediately.
