Five die in a road carnage in Chibombo district

Five people have died in a fatal road accident around Ibis Gardens area on the Great North Road in Chibombo District.

 

ZANIS reports that  the  accident occurred around 03 hours this morning when two trucks collided head on.

 

One of the trucks with trailer registration number AAR 7747 which was loaded with bags of charcoal was heading for Lusaka while the other truck with trailer registration number ABN 8122 was moving towards Kabwe direction.

 

 

Medical Officer In charge at Liteta Hospital Natalie Simakoloyi  confirmed the incident in an interview saying  that nine casualties were brought to the hospital from the accident scene.

 

 

She  said five were brought in dead, while one has been referred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka and another to Kabwe General Hospital.

 

 

Ms Simakoloyi said two other victims are in a stable condition and are receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

 

 

A check by ZANIS at Liteta hospital found police officers and health workers trying to identify the bodies of the victims.

  

 

And one of the survivals, Bedwin Machilika, who was on a truck which was loaded with bags of charcoal, said there were seven people on the truck.

 

 

Mr Machilika could not however recall anything about what happened but said he was sleeping when the accident occurred.

 

 

And a check by ZANIS on the accident scene found the two trucks had blocked the road forcing other vehicles to use the side roads.

 

By broadcast time, officers from the Zambia police and fire Brigade had started removing the bags of charcoal and the truck wreckages from the road.

 

Police are yet to establish the cause of the accident.
