JAMES Chamanyazi Ngoma, often referred to as the bridge between the old and new breed of local musicians, has confirmed that he will be contesting the presidency at Tuesday’s Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) annual general meeting.
He joins Petersen Zagage, who announced his candidature earlier and has already been jostling for votes among musicians.
Incumbent Maiko Zulu has served out his two terms and is not eligible for election.
But it is unlikely that the ZAM presidency will be contested by only Chamanyazi and Petersen. A number of candidates are expected to confirm their positions either just before or at the meeting.
And with ZAM having launched its five-year strategic plan, with the help of the US government, the association is becoming increasingly attractive.
Chamanyazi announced his candidature on his Facebook page, which is fast becoming the medium of communication for musicians with their audiences.
“Good morning, all ZAM members and musicians! This is to announce my candidature for the position of president of the Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM).
I have been in the music industry for 20 years this year and I’m a qualified music administrator, performer, recording artist and manager. Please put your vote on me for a better music industry. Thank you,” he said.
Chamanyazi and the Muvi Posse band are one of the very few contemporary live bands that perform authentic Zambian music in a multi-dimensional, traditional and multi-directional way.
He got his moniker from the title of his first album, which in Nyanja means Shame. Some of his famous compositions include Diya Lelo, Banyama, Nkhwale (Analila Mulenga) Tekanya, Umulumendo and Chidzukulu Tuvi.
He has been nominated for the 2013-2014 Mosi Zambian Music Awards for Best Traditional Album (Antu Ndiwo), alongside Tusole Band (Mwana Nabutema) and Kapalu Lizomba (Wahisa Nganda).
Otherwise, he has a number of awards to his name including the M-Net? We u @? (Where you at) award for Most Talked about African Artist in 2000, Sounds Arcade Award for bestselling album in 2002, Ngoma Awards for Best Male Artiste, Best Song, Most Conscious artist on HIV/AIDS in 2001, 2003 and 2004 and Best Band with Muvi Posse
