The United Party for National Development UPND has expressed concern over the date set by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to hold the Zambezi West by-election.

The ECZ has set January 7th 2014 as the date to hold both the Vubwi and Zambezi West parliamentary by-elections.

Former Zambezi west Member of Parliament Charles Kakoma has told Qnews that the date would disadvantage most of the voters as there are floods in the constituency during the period hence his concern that this would create voter apathy.

Mr. Kakoma has questioned the ECZ’s motive of setting the by-elections on such a time when they are aware that there floods in the constituency during that period.

He notes that the date only gives an advantage to the ruling party who capable of hiring choppers are thereby reaching the flooded areas while the oppositions cannot access due to mega resources.

Mr. Kakoma has however expressed confidence that the UPND will return the seat as it was the only party that was on the ground in the area.
