FRESH from bagging the just-ended Malawi Open championship in which he retained the title, national champion Edgar Kazembe returns to the court again this Wednesday to defend the Zambian version.

Zambia’s top players will this week take to the court at Lusaka Club to compete at the Open tournament where the country’s crème de la crème in lawn tennis is expected take to the clay court.

Kazembe’s title defence will be put to test especially with the emerging force in Nkumbu Chonya who stunned the national champ in the Copperbelt Open final recently, to claim the crown.

Zambia Tennis Association (ZTA) national coach, Teddy Chambisha has declared his players ready for the Zambia Open slated for this Wednesday.

Chambisha who hailed the players’ performance in Malawi, was oozing with confidence that they will replicate their display and predicted that a Zambian will win the tournament.
He said the players who commenced preparations yesterday were in high spirits ahead of the tournament.

“Going by our show in Malawi, I think the players are ready for the Zambia Open, we have a good crop of players who have shown improvements each time they compete at international level and I am positive of a good performance on home soil.

For the Zambia Open, we will be looking at the same players who competed at the Malawi tournament to be flag bearers for the country,” he said.

And speaking in a separate interview, ZTA president Francis Musonda said the association was prepared to host the tournament that will also attract participants from outside Zambia.
Musonda said preparations had reached an advanced stage and that ZTA was looking forward to hosting a successful tournament.
