SEVEN-Eleven yesterday donated K30, 000 towards Catherine Phiri’s Africa Boxing Union (ABU) bantamweight vacant title fight against Toma Hawa Babirye of Uganda set for September 27 at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.

The double-edged Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotion (OQBP) tournament will see Catherine face Babirye in a 10-rounder for the ABU title which will also be an elimination bout for the World Boxing Association (WBA) title  held by Suzi Ramadan of Australia.
With Seven-Eleven coming on board through its sponsorship which is in form of cash and materials, OQBP has remained with a deficit of K132, 000 for the tournament that will see another sensation, Charles Manyuchi, a Zimbabwean making his name in Zambia, defend his welterweight title against Isaac Sowah of Ghana.
Seven-Eleven director Jimmy Mulenga, who handed over the K5, 000 cheque and training kit worth K25, 000, said his company was a boxing partner and wanted to continue supporting the local boxers to victory.
OQBP operations manager Chris Malunga expressed delight at the donation saying it was because of such all-weather friends that the sport was growing.
OQBP coach Mike ‘Weaver’ Zulu said all his boxers were well sewn-up for the bouts and itching for the day that would bring them closer to more world acclaim.
Other supporting bouts will see Donald Kampamba from Exodus Boxing Promotions (EBP) face Wesley MacDade from Zimbabwe in a light heavyweight six-round contest, while Pythias Kambembe (OQBP) will exchange punches with Mwansa Kabinga from Mwenya Musenge Boxing Promotions (MMBP) in a light middleweight six-rounder.
Maxwell Sosoka from OQBP will square off with Bazlar Ngosa from MMBP in a lightweight six-round fight, with Martin Manda, representing OQBP, slugging it out with Bernard Sepe from MMBP in a bantamweight contest.
Bernard Mwango from EBP will fight Derick Besa from CBBP in a bantamweight fight as Osgood Kayuni takes on Mbiya Nkanku in a 10-round bout. In the women’s category, Lolita Muzeya will fight Chitalu Mulenga of OQBP.
