MMD president Nevers Mumba says he can only be removed as party leader at a party national convention and that the next one is only due in 2016.
Dr Mumba said he is unaware of any alleged plan to oust him from the party leadership.
He said he will continue being at the helm because the party’s constitution does not provide for the removal of a party president in such a manner.
“The MMD has a Constitution which does not allow any member to oust a president using a coup d’état. I can only be removed from my position through a national convention in 2016,” Dr Mumba said.
There have been suggestions that former Republican President Rupiah Banda is working on a return to the MMD’s leadership with the help of some members of parliament.
But Dr Mumba said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that such suggestions are unfounded.
“Let us not drag our former President into politics. Let him rest and we have now stopped commenting on matters that have no supporting evidence,” he said.
And Mr Banda says he has long retired from politics.
Mr Banda, who spoke through his administrative officer Mikatazo Wakumelo, said he quit politics and that his decision should be respected.
