MURDER-ACCUSED George Kalomo

By JIMMY CHIBUYE
SLAIN NIPA student Ruth Mbandu’s uncle George Kalomo and two others have been committed to the High Court for trial.
Kalomo is jointly charged with businessmen Edward Siandima and Collins Soma with murder. The offence is contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
Lusaka magistrate Betty Malupenga yesterday committed the trio to the High Court for trial.
State prosecutor Abraham Ngozo informed Mrs Malupenga that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has issued instructions of committal in the case.
“Following a certificate of committal from the DPP’s chambers, the three of you will now stop coming here. You will appear in the High Court for your plea and trial,” Mrs Malupenga said.
She said the three accused persons will appear in the High Court at the next session.
Earlier, Mr Ngozo said the State was ready to proceed with a preliminary inquiry but the proceedings were halted by the DPP’s chambers.
Mrs Malupenga was yesterday scheduled to commence preliminary inquiries into the murder of Ms Mbandu if instructions were not ready.
The magistrate had earlier summoned senior assistant commissioner Frank Mumbuna, who is Lusaka division criminal investigations officer, to explain why the matter had stalled.
And Kalomo’s lawyer Kelvin Hang’andu said it was unlawful and unconstitutional to keep the accused persons in custody for a long time without trial.
