— Students at Mansa college of education yesterday staged a peaceful demonstration following the suspension of a colleague by the administration for allegedly stealing 23 eggs.

The students are demanding among other things the reinstatement of a

third year student Reuben Mumba who was suspended last week for stealing the eggs from the college production unit.

The students are also pressing for the removal of the college

Principal Peter Chishimba.

The students who carried placards denouncing college management were

only stopped by the police who had a tough time to calm the students

from matching to the provincial education officer’s office.

The students say it is unfair that the college management can suspend

the student over 23 eggs when he has been working hard at the poultry

house where he was assigned by the administration.

Reuben Mumba was linked by the school authority to the theft after

another student was caught with 23 eggs by the  college security last week.

The students are also demanding that management allows them enough

time to go to their respective churches saying at the moment they are

only allowed an hour to attend church.

But College principal Peter Chishimba says the disciplinary committee

at the institution worked within the laws of the

institution  when they suspended  the student.

He wondered why the suspended student stole the eggs when he was put at

the poultry house on humanitarian grounds by the college so that he

could raise funds to pay his school fees.

Meanwhile calm has retained to the college after the students where

addressed by Luapula Province Education Officer Jennifer Banda.
